Chondroitin sulfate (CS) is a class of linear polysaccharides containing a polyanion, consisting of D-glucuronide (GlcA) and N-acetyl-D-aminogalactose (GalNAc) linked by β-1,3 glycosidic bonds to form disaccharide units, which are linked by β-1,4 glycosidic bonds and introduce sulfate groups at different positions during subsequent biosynthesis, and is widely found in cartilage and connective tissue of various animals.
In 1992, CosaminDS, a CS and aminoglycan combination product from Nutramax Lab., Inc. was approved by the FDA as a dietary supplement for the improvement of joint disease. [1] [1] Tianming, Zhang. Small molecule chondroitin sulfate (CSO) is a small molecule chondroitin sulfate that is degraded from large molecule chondroitin sulfate by bioenzymatic digestion, etc. It is easier to be absorbed and utilized due to its reduced molecular weight compared to common chondroitin sulfate.
CSO has the characteristics of low viscosity, good solubility, easy oral absorption, high bioavailability in vivo, good biological activity and strong pharmacological effects.

Chondroitin sulfate, a small molecule, has been studied pharmacodynamically at the cellular level in a variety of cells, and the results indicate that: 1. small-molecule chondroitin sulfate has the potential to be developed as a therapeutic agent for bone defects; 2. small-molecule chondroitin sulfate can be used as a biosynthetic substrate for broken cartilage, exhibiting strong pro-chondrogenic effects, and can be used as a treatment for OA.
